US Crime Statistics 2023

Among large cities reporting to the FBI in 2023, Memphis, Tennessee had the highest violent crime rate at 2,501.4 per 100,000 residents. Memphis, St. Louis, Detroit, and Baltimore also consistently rank near the top.

Based on 2023 FBI UCR violent crime rates, Maine is the safest US state with a rate of 102.5 per 100,000. Maine, New Hampshire, and New Jersey routinely rank as the safest.

Both violent and property crime declined in 2023 compared to 2022. Violent crime fell from 380.7 to 363.8 per 100,000 (a 4.4% drop), and property crime fell from 1954.4 to 1916.5 per 100,000. Over the last decade both rates are well below 2014 levels.

Crime rate is expressed as the number of reported offenses per 100,000 residents per year. The FBI compiles agency-level data and publishes annual rollups in the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program and Crime Data Explorer (CDE).

All rates come from the FBI Crime Data Explorer (CDE) and the FBI's annual Crime in the United States report for 2023, published 2024-09-23. Population denominators use US Census Bureau estimates for the same year. National baselines: violent 363.8 per 100k, property 1916.5 per 100k.

Urban density, reporting practices, and underlying socioeconomic factors typically push major-city rates above their state averages. The state figure is a population-weighted blend of all reporting agencies in that state, including low-crime suburban and rural jurisdictions.
