Percentile is computed by linear interpolation between the two nearest data brackets from 2024 BLS Current Population Survey and Census ACS data. Individual data covers personal wages and salary income; household data covers all earners in the same household. Top X% = 100 − percentile (floored at 1). Data represents US-wide distributions; income requirements for a given percentile vary significantly by region.
The US median individual income is approximately $56,000/year as of 2024 (BLS data). That means half of all US workers earn more and half earn less. The median household income is about $80,000.
Approximately $360,000 or more in individual income is required to be in the top 1% of US earners. For households, the threshold is around $500,000+ based on Census data.
Pew Research defines middle class as 2/3 to 2× the median household income — roughly $53,000 to $160,000 for a family of three. The definition varies significantly by region and family size.
Individual income is your personal earnings from all sources. Household income includes all earners living in the same residence. For comparing lifestyle, household income is often more relevant; for career benchmarks, individual income is the better measure.
