GPA Calculator computes weighted semester GPA from individual course grades and credits, calculates new cumulative GPA after adding a semester, and back-solves the GPA required across remaining credits to reach a target cumulative GPA.
Calculate your semester GPA from individual course grades, find your new cumulative GPA, or see the GPA you need to hit your target.
Semester GPA = sum(grade points × credit hours) ÷ total credit hours. Grade point scale: A+/A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, F = 0.0. Cumulative GPA = (old GPA × old credits + semester GPA × semester credits) ÷ (old credits + semester credits). GPA needed = (target GPA × total credits − current GPA × completed credits) ÷ remaining credits. If result exceeds 4.0, the target is not achievable.
GPA = sum(grade points × credits) ÷ total credits. An A (4.0) in a 3-credit course earns 12 grade points. A B+ (3.3) in a 4-credit course earns 13.2 points. Divide total points by total credits for GPA.
A 3.5 GPA falls between an A- (3.7) and a B+ (3.3). It typically represents a mix of A and B grades and is considered a strong GPA for most graduate school applications.
The impact of one semester depends on how many credits you have completed. After 90 credits, one 15-credit semester can change GPA by at most 0.2–0.3 points. Early in your degree, the impact is larger.
Most competitive graduate programs look for a 3.0 GPA minimum, with top programs preferring 3.5+. However, research experience, test scores, and recommendations often matter as much as GPA.
