US Navy formula (men): %BF = 86.01 × log10(waist − neck) − 70.041 × log10(height) + 36.76. Women: 163.205 × log10(waist + hip − neck) − 97.684 × log10(height) − 78.387. Deurenberg (1991): %BF = 1.20 × BMI + 0.23 × age − 10.8 × sex − 5.4 (sex: 1 = male, 0 = female). All measurements in cm. Body fat formulas are population-level estimates; DEXA or hydrostatic weighing provide clinical accuracy.
The US Navy formula is typically accurate within ±3–4% of DEXA scan measurements when measurements are taken correctly. It's less accurate for very lean or very obese individuals. DEXA scanning is the gold standard.
For men: Athletes 6–13%, Fitness 14–17%, Acceptable 18–24%, Obese 25%+. For women: Athletes 14–20%, Fitness 21–24%, Acceptable 25–31%, Obese 32%+. Essential fat (not safely reducible) is ~2–5% for men, ~10–13% for women.
Measure at the narrowest point of the torso — usually 1 inch above the navel. Stand relaxed and breathe normally. Don't suck in your stomach. Take the measurement after exhaling.
Lean body mass = total weight − fat mass. It includes muscle, bone, organs, and water. Preserving lean mass during fat loss is critical — this is why adequate protein intake and resistance training matter so much when dieting.
